Robert Mastrosimone – Winger

Originally drafted in the 2nd round and 54th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2019 NHL Draft, Mastrosimone went on to play 3 seasons at Boston University before finishing his final season at Arizona State, but never did sign a pro contract with Detroit. Mastrosimone subsequently was signed to an AHL contract by the Leafs as a US college free agent following a 2022-23 season in which he led Arizona State in scoring with 42 points in 38 games. He was re-signed to a second one-year AHL contract for 2024-25. A 5’10” forward, Mastrosimone played a bottom six role for the Marlies last season, finishing with 4 goals and 15 points in 41 games last season.

Strengths

  1. High Energy and Compete Level

Mastrosimone’s high motor and relentless energy are among his defining traits. He consistently plays with a competitive edge, never taking a shift off. This drive is especially evident in his defensive game, where he is known for his strong backchecking and willingness to engage physically despite his smaller frame. Mastrosimone’s effort level makes him a valuable asset in all situations, including penalty killing. His work ethic stands out, particularly in battles along the boards and in high-traffic areas, where he doesn’t shy away from the physical side of the game.

  1. Offensive Versatility

Offensively, Mastrosimone has demonstrated good creativity and playmaking ability. He has a knack for making smart decisions with the puck, especially in tight situations. His ability to handle the puck in traffic and distribute it to teammates makes him a versatile offensive threat. His willingness to shoot the puck and his creativity in the offensive zone offer future potential to become a bigger contributor both as a goal-scorer and a playmaker at the AHL level.

  1. Defensive Responsibility
Mastrosimone’s two-way game is a significant strength. He is highly effective on the penalty kill and shows a deep understanding of defensive positioning. His backchecking ability and responsible play in his own zone help him contribute to a well-rounded game. Coaches value his reliability in key defensive situations, making him a trusted player in special teams scenarios.

Weaknesses

  1. Skating Mechanics and Speed

While Mastrosimone is mobile, his skating mechanics have been identified as an area for improvement. His stride lacks the explosiveness seen among NHL skaters, which can limit his ability to separate from defenders at higher levels. Improving his acceleration and overall skating efficiency would help him adjust to the faster pace of professional hockey.

  1. Size and Physical Play

At 5’10” and 170 lbs, Mastrosimone’s size can be a disadvantage, particularly when facing larger, more physical opponents. While his work ethic compensates for some of this, he can struggle in board battles and in front of the net against bigger defensemen. His smaller frame also limits his ability to play a power game, which may cap his potential in physical matchups.

Conclusion

Mastrosimone is a well-rounded player, especially as a high-energy, two-way forward. His strengths in defensive play, offensive creativity, and relentless work ethic make him an intriguing prospect for the Toronto Marlies, however he is still looking to establish himself as a regular contributor at the AHL level.
